I just loved it! This was a story similar to Pride & Prejudice in basics, but set in northern Victorian (where was told very graphically). It was darker than Austen books and it was kind of a relief to read a story like that without her language and ironic wits. :) It was not a book to be forgotten easily with the powerful romance and the tension between the characters (I especially loved the last scene, it was quite emotinally charged, I got the goose bumps while reading it.) and also very real ...more

Non so quante volte ho iniziato questo commento senza mai riuscire a scrivere qualcosa di decente. Di Elizabeth Gaskell ho già letto l'anno scorso Cranford, che mi ha lasciato con una gran voglia di approfondire. Purtroppo (o per fortuna) i libri che richiamano la mia attenzione (a volte imperiosamente) sono talmente tanti che solo questo gennaio sono riuscita a tornare alla Gaskell. I suoi libri sono tutti disponibili su Gutenberg e ho scelto North and South principalmente per poter poi vedere ...more

I have the unfortunate mindset that I will not not follow a book through to it's end. It might wallow in "currently reading" for years, but I never toss it aside unfinished. All I can say is thank god Gaskell couldn't be bothered finishing it herself so I didn't have to keep suffering on through. The ending was abrupt and tidy. I am sure Margaret and Thornton would have gone on to have an unsatisfactory life together as Margaret is a total moron. ...more
