A great eerie gothic feel to this novel. This one really has the feel of a Daphne du Maurier novel or even in some ways Bram Stoker. A perfect October read.

I feel like I just finished a book that is going to become a classic. Wow wow wow. It was so moody and romantic and depressing. I absolutely LOVED it. And it really makes me want to read Wuthering Heights again (which I admittedly didn’t love but this book reminded me so much of it).

My first book started for the scary books for Halloween. This one was good, it caught my attention, it had suspense and kept you questioning. Up to a certain point there was the hint of what’s really going on and that made it that much scarier. When it then turned into what’s happening and the more unrealistic to became, the less I enjoyed it. I didn’t have any real gasping scary parts, but it was disturbing and kept my attention until the end.

4.5/5
reading this just made me really excited for the tv adaptation because the story just lends itself to be told visually. my only problem is that i thought the writing style at times was a bit flat for the story it was telling. i think the prose could've leant into the gothic even more. ...more
