Last weekend, I finished the second half of Flowers for Algernon in two sittings, just in time to have a week to ponder the book and gather my thoughts about it. By the end of the book, I felt as ambivalent about Charlie as I did initially, though I did empathize with him a lot more in the second half.

This one pretty much caught my attention right from the jump as it intentionally uses dreadful grammar to encapsulate the inefficiencies in the protagonist's mental ability as he writes in his journal. Then, the reader sees his grammar improve upon having a surgical procedure done to improve his ability to recall new information. The first time I read this book was back in middle school, so I didn't enjoy it as much. But after reading it again in high school for a role I was to play as Alice, Charlie's love interest, I fell in love with the characters.
