I've loved the movie for years but never read the book until now. The movie was a loving, faithful adaptation that really brought life to the characters and the situations, but of course, the book had the chance to delve a little deeper, present more complex characters and even included a few characters and words and situations that were completely missing from the movie.

I'm so glad I reread this. Some of my initial impressions of the book from when I was made to read it in school came to me as I read it this time (impressions in a true abstract sense; I didn't remember the details of the story), but something that really impressed me about the book this time was, actually, the humor and optimism (in the form of compassion) in the story; also, different tropes and turns of phrase were just so American that it endeared the book to me, being thousands of miles awa
