I've loved the movie for years but never read the book until now. The movie was a loving, faithful adaptation that really brought life to the characters and the situations, but of course, the book had the chance to delve a little deeper, present more complex characters and even included a few characters and words and situations that were completely missing from the movie.

In an effort to re-read the books on my favorites list, I've come across this classic that I first read in October of 2001. I wish I would have reviewed books back then, beyond just a rating, because I'd like to know why it was a favorite at that time. On my re-read, I still thought it was good, but I definitely didn't love it, and I found a lot of it to be rather slow going.

#1 child will be studying this in his upcoming 7th grade English class. I was concerned he was too young to appreciate/understand it and also I wanted him to have a good first experience. Be able to just read it for pleasure the first time around. No group read alouds ,no work sheets to complete etc. So far, so good. He is loving it thus far, We are listening to the Sissy Spacek audio version, and discussing it as we go along, which is a nice way to experience it. we leave for a long vacation to
