Colombia - It took me forever to read this - nearly a year, IIRC. I was uncomfortably lost in it for a while, but eventually found that it had a lot in common with several German novels (Novalis' Heinrich von Ofterdingen and Goethe's Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre, for instance) and got a better feel for what García Marquez was trying to do. I really need to go back to read it again and think about it properly. ...more

same reaction now that I've finished it. bizarre hard to follow. not really sure of the plot. some interesting vignettes and good descriptions but way too many. not sure the vulgar sexual stuff was necessary. I wasn't offended but seemed borderline gratuitous. ...more

Very confusing. The sex scenes were vulgar and seemingly gratuitous. Some interesting vignettes. Couldn’t figure out a plot. Don’t get it.
