Hello all! Starting up the monthly discussions for May 2018 book-of-the-month suggestions. This discussion is for a brand new category called BOOKSHELF CATCH-UP.

This is a catch-up book club, after all. For this category, you can nominate any book that the group has previously read. For a list of books that the group has previously read and discussed, please see the bookshelf.

The following books are NOT eligible as we have reread them as a group within the last twelve months:
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I'll start off by suggesting a group read that I personally missed - The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway.

Stephanie Gwaltney | 94 comments I second 1984. Over on the modern thread, 1Q84 has been nominated. It would be kinda cool if the group read both in the same month.

message 20: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I second 1984. I didn't realize 1Q84 was related; I'll check that out.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Stephanie wrote: "I second 1984. Over on the modern thread, 1Q84 has been nominated. It would be kinda cool if the group read both in the same month."

WITHDRAW my second for 1984, because my main interest in reading it would be to compare it to 1Q84. Just to warn ppl, 1Q84 is over 900 pp long. And one reviewer says 'icky sex scenes.' (And she doesn't seem to be the kind of person who would call a sex scene 'icky' without good reason.)

Edit again - oh boy did I confuse myself, sorry. Clarified now, I hope. Thank you for the catch, Ella.

message 22: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) I will second the sun also rises

message 23: by Ella (last edited Mar 17, 2018 02:17PM) (new)

Ella (ellamc) No worries, Cheryl. I just didn't want anyone to run away from Orwell because of length. ;) And yes, the titles aren't easy to type quickly without at least a few mistypes! Now I'll just do my seconds all in one post as I meant to do first time. Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone.

I second:

The Sun Also Rises
One Hundred Years of Solitude
Breakfast at Tiffany's
