I wish I had read this before I watched the movie, because the movie was pretty accurate to the book and it was kind of a bummer knowing what happened almost every step of the way. So I would definitely recommend reading the book first so there's that sense of suspense.
It's definitely an exceptionally nerdy sci-fi with lots of technical details and sarcasm, but go watch the movie trailer. It's a way better sell than anything I could say. ...more

Remember that part of the Apollo 13 movie when they have to figure out how to make a CO2 filter using a plastic bag and some duct tape? And you find yourself feeling kind of proud of the human race for being smart and resourceful? If you loved that part of the movie, then you will love The Martian. It's the story of a guy who is accidentally left behind on Mars when his NASA crew members mistakenly believe that he's dead.
