I don't even really have words to describe how I feel after finishing this book. I'm gutted. I'm exhausted. I am 100% convinced Kristin Hannah will never top this one.
I have no real idea how close to accurate the events of book are but I do know that it makes me ashamed to be German. It's absolutely unimaginable what those men did to Europe. Unimaginable.
And to think that there are groups in the world that want to do similar things today to Americans/Christians is absolutely terrifying. ...more

Yeah, I didn't love it. So sue me.
I mean, I liked it... but I think I need to put a moratorium on Holocaust/ Europe WWII books for a while. (It probably won't happen, because the market is flooded with them - and some really good stories to boot.
But this just bothered me.
Maybe Kristin Hannah is right: World War II was a war where the men were physically weak, and easily beguiled because a woman was pretty. And certainly women have been under-represented in war literature. (Although, my favorite ...more

This is an engrossing story that kept me up way too late the night I finished reading it.
After reading some of the other reviews on this site, I see that the book is criticized for getting some details wrong and for "throwing the kitchen sink" at the characters. True. EVERY bad thing that ever happened to anyone during the war happens to at least one of these sisters. I can't argue with that critique, but I'm not sure I mind. Everything that happens in this book - deprivation, starvation, home ...more

World War II chick lit. Hm. A previously unknown genre for me. This was just good enough to keep me interested, and I finished it, so not a total loss. The characters are a bit stereotypical - Good Sister (family oriented, domestic, a little fearful) and Bad Ass Sister (beautiful, escape artist, fighter of Nazis, climber of mountains). "Good Nazi" (he's a Nazi, but he's nice to Good Sister) and Bad Nazi (you know the type). Nice but disposable side characters. Brave Resistance Fighter Man who lo

I held off reading this because I had just finished All the Light You cannot See. Similar in subject - France during the second world war but in literary style, very different. The Nightingale is written in an easy to read style which moves the story along quickly. The characters are just as engaging and fully drawn. Definitely worth reading.
