Alex and Connor's father has recently died - Mom is struggling to pay the bills, they've had to move from their house to a rental, and things aren't looking good. Alex is the star pupil in their class, Connor the polar opposite. On their birthday, their grandmother arrives with their (and their father's) favorite story book... only this isn't just a book, it's a Magical Passage to the Land of Stories.

I wanted to like this book. The ideas were interesting (I'm a sucker for twisted fairy tales) but ultimately the plot and the writing fell short for me. The characters were dragged through the story rather than pushing the plot forward themselves, the dialogue felt unnatural, and there were just too many coincidences and cliches.

I DID finish the book, though, and there was definitely something fun to the story. Hopefully Chris's fans will have a good time with it.

The writing is awkward and there are weird plot moments, but also a few charming sections.

Kids really enjoyed this creative series about kids who fall into a fairy tale land. Mom enjoyed it too.

Word of warning: a very realistic grief/death chapter at the beginning took us by surprise and was a little painful for kids who recently experienced loss.

DNF at 30%.

"It's not you, it's me". I can see how the book could be charming, but it completely failed to catch my fancy. So when I still didn't care about the characters and their plight after 3 hours of listening, I figured it was time to move on.

The sad thing is that I was a lot more interested in the "real world" events than what happened after they fell into the book.

I liked the story a great deal. My only problem was what he did with Red.
