I started this book, one of my all time favorite Streatfeilds, standing in a public library in Bermuda in November 1971, and it was years before I found a copy in the US but it was just as good as I had remembered it.

I have always loved Noel Streatfeild's books and as a child I got my library to ILL them for me or hunted through second hand book stores to find all of them. She tells the perfect "girls stories". I was always able to find one character in each book that was my favorite. They definitely stand up to re-reads.

I didn't think this one was as good as Ballet Shoes or Theater Shoes. Maybe it's just because the formula behind the Shoes series isn't fresh to me anymore. Still, I think the other two are better, story-wise and character-wise, than this one.

I think this is my favorite of the "Shoes" books.

I had never read any of the "Shoes" books - I guess I just didn't run into them as a child. Typical story of plucky orphans and a spoiled child who receives a much-needed come-uppance, but better written than most.

Ever since watching "You've Got Mail" I've wanted to read books by Noel Streatfield. Thanks to an online friend of mine, I've finally been able to. It's a children's book, to be sure, but quite sweet for what it is, and I enjoyed the atmosphere of it. I also have "Theater Shoes" and "Ballet Shoes", but as far as I can see it's not a continuing series, but rather separate stories?
