SOLVED. Book read in 1970s about two dancers, one called Dulce maybe. [s]

I remember loving this book but can’t remember a lot of details. I believe the two girls were rivals and were, I think, ballerinas. It was the first time I encountered the word “plait” that made me feel it might have been translates from a foreign book. I read it in the mid to late 70s but don’t know if it was a current book or somewhat old. I think a character was either named Dulce or something similar. I think one of the girls may have been monied while the other was not.

Dancing Shoes (originally published as Wintles Wonders) has two young dancers, Dulcie and Hilary, and it's British so probably has plaits.
