congratulations! semifinalist in goodreads' best science fiction category 2016!
what is this book….???
i suppose it's best described as a sci fi/speculative fiction love story with philosophy sauce all over it.
it's also another one of those reviewing-on-eggshells books, because of all the spoilers that could possibly be spoilt, where we're going to have to dance our way around a bunch of important nouns and verbs.

so, this little puzzle book of genre-blending mastery... i know i wrote "love story" ...more

A fun, fast paced science fiction thriller. I read it in 2 nights and couldn't put it down. The book is about the quantum theory of many worlds which states that all decisions we make throughout our lives basically create branches, and that each possible path through the decision tree can be thought of as a parallel world. And in this book, someone invents a way to switch between these worlds. This was nicely alluded to/foreshadowed in this quote:

From "Dark Matter", the short-story, by B.J. Novak:
"And that's the puzzling thing about dark matter," said the scientist at the end of our planetarium tour. "It makes up over 90 percent of the universe, and yet nobody knows what it is!"
People on the tour chuckled politely, like Wow, isn't that a fun fact?
But I looked closer at the scientist, and I could tell something from the smirky little smile on his fat smug face:
This motherf*cker knew exactly what dark matter was."

A fast-paced thriller with some science fiction leanings -- fantastic book! The first half left me breathless and then (thankfully) it slowed down a bit. The second half got totally mind-bendy and weird (and maybe a little bogged down by the science), but I was still completely hooked on this book.
Fantastic.
Fantastic.

The plot premise is interesting...sort of "It's a Wonderful Life" through the quantum multiverse. It brings up some interesting ideas and questions. However, I thought the writing was awful. Also, the characters were not very believable. I wish it had been better.
