Would it be trite to say 'Momo' is a timeless tale? There is something familiar about this book, not only because you see the Men in Grey sitting around you every day at work, but also because it seems like the source of a lot of other stories that come later - your Pratchetts, Gaimans etc. At times the writing seemed a bit stilted but I have a feeling this may be due to the translation (I have the Maxwell Brownjohn edition). Much more philosophical than I would have expected. Many thanks to Miriam for sending it to me!

I hesitate to give this book only three stars, because it's really a very good late-childhood/young-adult book. Assuming, though, that the star rating system corresponds not to a book's intrinsic merit but to the reader's personal enjoyment, I'm giving it three: for an adult reader, this is a charming fantasy book, with something of a modern-day "Alice in Wonderland" feel about it; but, of course, adults are not the audience to whom it is directed.
