Although this was a survival story of a self-sufficient girl, while I was reading it and in memory, I remember I felt incredibly lonely for her. I felt so lonely and sad that I was not able to truly enjoy the story. I liked it but couldn’t love it. Maybe that’s a good recommendation for how the story was so beautifully told, but I can’t give it more than 3 stars.

This book was really interesting.... But I think it would have been better in print... The girl who read the book was just soooo booorrrriiinnngggg.... I mean, it's not like Karana was a peppy American teenager, but GEEZ, some feeling would be nice. But then, maybe it was the writing... Who knows! I remember liking this book a lot more when I was younger. This time? It was a lot like Cast Away. Long. ...more

Basically the best book I ever read as a child. Put a good emphasis on self-sustainability, creative handiwork, and appreciation of the natural world.
