Precious story of an orphan finding a place of her own, which feels like an updated version of The Secret Garden, with more than a dash of A Little Princess thrown in! And yes, it's written by THAT Julie Andrews! And written well!

I bought and read this book because I’m a huge Julie Andrews fan. I also love orphan stories; I’ve even designated a Goodreads shelf for orphan books. Anyway, this one really touched my heart and it’s a really well written and interesting story. Deserves to be a classic.

First of all.... I love me some Julie Andrews. (Edwards) Even though I can't get used to the Edwards part. Mary Poppins, the Sound of Music, these things changed my life. But you tricked me this time Ms. Andrews. I previously had read The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles and thought that I loved it but on reflection and seeing what Ms. Andrews was really trying to do here in Mandy. I may have to change my mind.

This is my favorite book from when I was a kid. Mandy was so determined to make a place of her own, she went too far sometimes. When Mandy refuses to talk to the Fitzgerald family on the phone, because it hurts too much, still puts a lump in my throat.

This book is another I read over and over again as a kid. I don't think I owned it, so I must have borrowed it from the library repeatedly.
I loved stories of orphans. (Do ya think this had anything to do with my dissatisfaction with my family life?) I also liked stories of people who set up simple little houses and made do with simple little things. This book nailed both topics. ...more

This gets four stars not because of how I felt about it today, but because I loved it so much when I was young. I enjoyed my most recent read-through, and though I don't fully understand why I read it three times when I was in 4th grade, I'm glad my younger self had such books to escape into during those important years.

This is my favorite children's book. I read it when I was eight, and it was the perfect book for me. Mandy is an orphan who finds an abandoned cottage and makes it her special place.
My parents bought it because it was on a list of books for kids who had been adopted, as I was.
Girls who liked The Secret Garden will like this, too, and this is an easier read. ...more

I read this book when I was a kid, lost it, and found it again last year. I needed a comfort read recently, and I picked this one up once again. Not a difficult read (even for a kid), but a pleasant, sweet story. Julie Andrews is famous for starring in children's movies, she ought to be just as famous for her wonderful children's writing.

I loved the idea of having something amazing just over the fence, an adventure in your own back yard, something secret and private and exciting; it was a good exercise in imagination and a thrilling new concept for a young girl.
