My first Groff was unimpressive, so I was skeptical, but this was a great book. I'm sorry it took me so long to read it, something like 2 months.
At it's core it was a love story, with exceptionally flawed lovers. The characters in the story were interesting and well-crafted. There was also a ton of creativity in the story itself, and some both unexpected and expected surprises.

Two mentally ill people and/or highly traumatized individuals. Somewhat devoid of insight, reflectivity, and relationally. Narcisstic, emotional, fragile, defended. The question I am posing is: Can there be love, true love? I say, yes, there was love. It may not be what any of us defines or desires as love. But to each of these souls, characters, it was everything. It didn't always feel like love. Not the way I and we know it, but I believed they loved to their ultimate capacity, (which was low)

Behind every great man, there's a great women.
Both of the protagonists of this rich and volatile exploration of relationships were truly great. Horrible, self-centred, repulsive, mean, but great.
I must admit that it took me a while to get into this. The prose was fantastic from the start, Groff is just a master at putting the right words together to make the everyday sound romantic and epic. However, the jumping around in time and the unreliable narration made this book difficult to follow.

Many reviewers loved this book. I did not. Boy born into wealth. Daddy dies young - Mother controls all money. Off to boarding school - little contact with mother. Wants to be an actor. Sees lovely mysterious girl. Goes to her - asks to marry her. They marry. He is a failed actor. Behind the scenes, wife is controlling everything (just like his mother). She makes him a success - the preening fool does not know that his wife is pulling all the strings. He dies and then we learn her back story - n

This novel is written in two parts. It is the story of a marriage told from two different view points. I read the first half and didn't get all the hype this book received last year. If I wasn't reading it for a book club I might have put it down. But I am certainly glad I stayed with it to the end. The second half is very powerful and brings the whole book full circle. Looking forward to our group discussion.

When I finished this book, I was reminded of how I felt after reading The Goldfinch. It was very well written and there were times where I didn't want to put it down. Then, there were times where I wanted to skim it to keep it moving. Overall, I am glad I read it, I guess.
