Intrigued by the Compare Books function

I love this and have been using it for several years out of sheer nosiness.
We actually have 81% in common which seems a little high to me. But maybe that is because, while I love rending, I don't love dark and I am ok with some magical realism.

I just was checking to see if Barbara and I tended to have close taste ...."
You and I are 76% compatible for the books we both rated.
It's worth noting with that feature that you can compare specific shelves.

LOL!

Here are my closest matches:
Anita 83%, Susie 84%, Kristel 88%, Nicole D 79%, JoLene 82%, Rina 84%, Kate 82%, Book Concierge 82%, Cora 83%

Punxsygal - 100% !!!!
Linda S - 86%
Cora - 85%
Nicole - 84%
Olivermagnus - 80%
Ellen - 80%

I just did comparisons with everyone posting in this thread and had the best match with Anita at 85%. I will definitely be playing around with this more (and making sure I pay attention to what Anita is reading and rating.)

Lowest with Karin! which surprised me. 50% (which is actually still a very good number now that I think about it.)
Karin, correct me if I'm wrong ....do we have homeschooling, an adult child with Asperger's, interest in public theater, and Christian lit in common?

That's neat. I'll have to pay more attention to books you like :-). Looks like we do enjoy a lot of the same series. Now I feel compelled to go and play around with this function :-)

Hmmm. This is a little suspicious. When I use it with you BnB, look what I get! You are my highest so far, but shouldn't we get the same percentage?
Your tastes are 85% similar for the books you both rated. Here are 100 books you have in common:

Ok, so if you click on someone's name in a discussion

Like I just clicked on yours from your message.
You will see their profile, and under their immediate personal information, you'll see:

81% with BooknBlues"
Ok, so when I run mine for you, Megalion, I get only 63%. I wonder how the underlying statistics work.
Maybe they use each person's 100 highest rated books or 100 most recently read books as the base . . .and then compare the others to that. I'll have to look at mine more closely and see if it uses the same books each time or what.

I also had 85% with you, Denizen, though oddly have different numbers with others! And I think you are the highest person I've found so far!

Anita's books: 1047 (903 not in common)
Books in common: 144 (11.26% of your library and 14.04% of her library)
My books: 1279 (1135 not in common)
sort (?)
Your tastes are 57% similar for the books you both rated. Here are 100 books you have in common:
I was able to compare with Elizabeth even though she has yet to confirm my friend request, so you don't have to be friends to do this.
So far, based just on the names on this page, my strongest similarity in books rated is with RACHEL at 73 percent, but Barbara is a close second with 71 percent.
Now I'm going to have to go check more people. What are the odds that I'll find an 80 or 90 percent match in reviews?

Ha, ha, that sounds about right. Differences are good!
I would love to find a 90% but no luck so far.

Would be interesting to understand the actual algorithm since it seems like it would be the same percentage for both people. I wonder if it somehow factors in the number of total books that you read vs total number of books the person you are looking at has read.

Yeah, I don't know how that works and have never used it.
I do use the book compare feature for every person who sends a friend request - after I've read what they put in their blurb, if they've put anything in that space. Some things, like dystopian or Christian fiction will give me a heads up that perhaps we don't have much reading in common, but I still use the compare feature, just to see. I don't use the percentages as much as I look at the books we've both rated. I also look to see what the person has shelved recently. Sometimes the person is looking to make a shift in their reading taste and I'll be able to see that there.

LOL - depends. GR can be overwhelming. Remember, I'm pretty much officially an old person. Pretty much, although I might have a couple of years before it is truly official. And I have sooo many books I want to read before I can't read anymore. I have to do something to limit my exposure. ;-)

LOL!! I am middle aged and yet I probably should be thinking the same way!

I wonder if they pick a different 100 books. We may have more than 100 books in common and that is why it varies.
That is my best guess.

Lol, I have a lot of dystopia in my read column. Probably not Christian fiction. I don't pay attention to whether or not a book is considered that. The former is obvious though.

After that - to the right you'll see- book compatibility test. Click that

You might be the only person I know outside of Alaska who has read Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage and Survival.

I love fables of all kinds from all cultures. Really feel like this was a particular shiny gem among them all.

Ive been accepting everyone, as well. At least so far. I did remove someone already who was bombarding me with recommendations, though

Well, im excited i came up for someone! This makes me feel better about telling you youd probably like The Light Between Oceans.
I havent yet done this because ive had company for a few days and am limiting my time online, plus id rather do this on my pc and ive mostly been on my tablet.

lol - I thought of you first here on PBT... though it seems to be higher with annapi at 89%
A lot of 60s & 70s with the rest of the group and most others, it seems...

Do you mean me or another Jen (sorry there are so many Jen's over here)? We are friends. I just checked.

Lol. We are friends (of course :). We should try and meet up sometime. I think we were 70% -- sounds about right. I think we often read the same types of books but do differ in how we rate them.
I often keep an eye out for you when I go to bookstores! Thanks for the comment about my daughter. I wanted to confirm you meant me before responding.
I am going to APA this year. If you are going, we should meet up. which reminds me, I need to book my tickets.

:) I work in the same field as you too. I'm a research coordinator in the psych dept at Yale. We work with the parents of kids with CD and ODD. You are a psychologist? Or social worker? Hopefully I don't have you confused with another. My guess is I'm similar to (other) Jen as well. At least her baseball TBR looks very similar to my recently read/TBR list.
I am new but I think I already have an idea of who my book tastes match with. I'll see if my initial impressions are correct.

ooh, another one of us! I'm a researcher/psychologist at Brown. We should all meet up one day. Right now I'm full-time research (last year I was 50-50 split with research and clinical). My research is in the area of mood disorders and suicide.
now I'm off to look at your shelf

Our initials are even the same.

Even back at Shelfari, I used the Books in Common feature to screen friend requests if I don't actually know a person.. I've used it here too.
Books mentioned in this topic
Two Old Women: An Alaskan Legend of Betrayal, Courage and Survival (other topics)Fates and Furies (other topics)
I just was checking to see if Barbara and I tended to have close taste . . .because she was thinking about Fates and Furies, and I wanted to see if we generally share the same taste. Turns out - - only 61% of the time.
I then tried Susie because I feel like she and I have enjoyed a lot of the same books - - we were 83%.
I'm now determined to figure out who on PBT is truly the closest!!
Anyone else ever play with this feature?
p.s. I'm trying all the candidates who I think would be a match . . .so far Susie is the closest so pretty funny she came to mind to try first. Nicole D is the next closest I've found so far . . .I'm going to keep searching!
