Anita Pomerantz | 9297 comments I am intrigued by the function that allows you to compare books with your friends. I wonder who on PBT is my closest match.

I just was checking to see if Barbara and I tended to have close taste . . .because she was thinking about Fates and Furies, and I wanted to see if we generally share the same taste. Turns out - - only 61% of the time.

I then tried Susie because I feel like she and I have enjoyed a lot of the same books - - we were 83%.

I'm now determined to figure out who on PBT is truly the closest!!

Anyone else ever play with this feature?

p.s. I'm trying all the candidates who I think would be a match . . .so far Susie is the closest so pretty funny she came to mind to try first. Nicole D is the next closest I've found so far . . .I'm going to keep searching!

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2599 comments Actually, I think 61% is very good - 83% is excellent. I have played with this feature because, at Shelfari, I would always check the shelves of people who asked to friend me for books we had in common then I'd do a quick %. You know how it is, someone asks to be your friend because they want to see how many friends they could rack up! I always rejected those. I do like that GR does that for you.

Booknblues | 12129 comments Anita wrote: "I am intrigued by the function that allows you to compare books with your friends. I wonder who on PBT is my closest match.."

I love this and have been using it for several years out of sheer nosiness.

We actually have 81% in common which seems a little high to me. But maybe that is because, while I love rending, I don't love dark and I am ok with some magical realism.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anita wrote: "I am intrigued by the function that allows you to compare books with your friends. I wonder who on PBT is my closest match.

You and I are 76% compatible for the books we both rated.

It's worth noting with that feature that you can compare specific shelves.

message 5: by Susie (new)

Susie I love this feature! I always check it as soon as I become friends with someone. Anita, I think you are my highest percentage too. We'll have to keep checking it over time to see how it changes.

message 6: by Susie (new)

Susie Nicole and I are 82% - neck and neck!

Elizabeth (Alaska) While I'm on the compare books function, I note which books we might be polar opposites on. Some books/reviews will give me a clue that even if the percentage is sufficient, some books might be deal killers.

message 8: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2599 comments I just realized, you were comparing the % of books rated not just books on shelves! With Shelfari, I was just comparing what was on the shelves, not what the ratings were - which was just about impossible there anyway.

message 9: by Susie (new)

Susie Oo! Nicole D and I are 87%! Jen 84%. Cora 85%. Olivermagnus - 84%. Kathy 80%. The winner is Shuva - 91%!!! Oh hang on - Kate and I are 100%, and also Sabrina! It feels like we're playing Perfect Match!

message 10: by Susie (new)

Susie It appears that I collect like-minded GR friends.

LOL!

message 12: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments So far my top matches are 90% and 89% for two people not in this group. One is my co-blogger and we call each other book twins.

Here are my closest matches:
Anita 83%, Susie 84%, Kristel 88%, Nicole D 79%, JoLene 82%, Rina 84%, Kate 82%, Book Concierge 82%, Cora 83%

message 13: by Barbara M (new)

Barbara M (barbara-m) | 2599 comments In PBT, my top matches are:

Punxsygal - 100% !!!!
Linda S - 86%
Cora - 85%
Nicole - 84%
Olivermagnus - 80%
Ellen - 80%

message 14: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I've always looked at the earlier comparison of number of common books on your shelves. This number seems like it would be more relevant.

I just did comparisons with everyone posting in this thread and had the best match with Anita at 85%. I will definitely be playing around with this more (and making sure I pay attention to what Anita is reading and rating.)

message 15: by Megalion (new)

Megalion | 484 comments 72% with Anita
81% with BooknBlues

message 16: by Blueberry (last edited Apr 11, 2016 11:01AM) (new)

Blueberry (blueberry1) Highest with Rachel at 82%. Maybe because it looks like we have read a lot of the same series.

Lowest with Karin! which surprised me. 50% (which is actually still a very good number now that I think about it.)
Karin, correct me if I'm wrong ....do we have homeschooling, an adult child with Asperger's, interest in public theater, and Christian lit in common?

That's neat. I'll have to pay more attention to books you like :-). Looks like we do enjoy a lot of the same series. Now I feel compelled to go and play around with this function :-)

Hmmm. This is a little suspicious. When I use it with you BnB, look what I get! You are my highest so far, but shouldn't we get the same percentage?

Your tastes are 85% similar for the books you both rated. Here are 100 books you have in common:

message 20: by Jen (new)

Jen | 1545 comments Something is off because I was told I had 0% with Shuva when in fact I know we have similar tastes and often rate books similarly

Ok, so when I run mine for you, Megalion, I get only 63%. I wonder how the underlying statistics work.

Maybe they use each person's 100 highest rated books or 100 most recently read books as the base . . .and then compare the others to that. I'll have to look at mine more closely and see if it uses the same books each time or what.

I also had 85% with you, Denizen, though oddly have different numbers with others! And I think you are the highest person I've found so far!

message 24: by Karin (last edited Apr 11, 2016 12:19PM) (new)

Karin | 9247 comments For Anita I got this, which sounds about right given our differences in reading tastes:

Anita's books: 1047 (903 not in common)
Books in common: 144 (11.26% of your library and 14.04% of her library)
My books: 1279 (1135 not in common)
sort (?)
Your tastes are 57% similar for the books you both rated. Here are 100 books you have in common:

I was able to compare with Elizabeth even though she has yet to confirm my friend request, so you don't have to be friends to do this.

So far, based just on the names on this page, my strongest similarity in books rated is with RACHEL at 73 percent, but Barbara is a close second with 71 percent.

Now I'm going to have to go check more people. What are the odds that I'll find an 80 or 90 percent match in reviews?

message 25: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9297 comments Karin wrote: "Your tastes are 57% similar for the books you both rated

Ha, ha, that sounds about right. Differences are good!

I would love to find a 90% but no luck so far.

message 26: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9247 comments Okay, on a quick start, so far I found one person at 80 percent on the books we have both rated, and that's Tien. I have to go, but I know I'll be back to do more of this at some point.

message 27: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9297 comments Ok, now I just found some other little gizmo - - -"A Book Compatibility Test". It gives a different percentage and lets you post your result to Facebook . . .

message 28: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I have used this feature more when I get random people requesting to be friends with me. I do like actually looking at the compare of stars. This can also be done by looking at someone's specific shelves.

Would be interesting to understand the actual algorithm since it seems like it would be the same percentage for both people. I wonder if it somehow factors in the number of total books that you read vs total number of books the person you are looking at has read.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anita wrote: "Ok, now I just found some other little gizmo - - -"A Book Compatibility Test". It gives a different percentage and lets you post your result to Facebook . . ."

Yeah, I don't know how that works and have never used it.

I do use the book compare feature for every person who sends a friend request - after I've read what they put in their blurb, if they've put anything in that space. Some things, like dystopian or Christian fiction will give me a heads up that perhaps we don't have much reading in common, but I still use the compare feature, just to see. I don't use the percentages as much as I look at the books we've both rated. I also look to see what the person has shelved recently. Sometimes the person is looking to make a shift in their reading taste and I'll be able to see that there.

message 30: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9297 comments Fascinating to hear how people use this . . .I never thought of it as a way to screen the friend requests. I've just been accepting like everybody . . .lol, I'm guessing that's not a good idea?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Anita wrote: "Fascinating to hear how people use this . . .I never thought of it as a way to screen the friend requests. I've just been accepting like everybody . . .lol, I'm guessing that's not a good idea?"

LOL - depends. GR can be overwhelming. Remember, I'm pretty much officially an old person. Pretty much, although I might have a couple of years before it is truly official. And I have sooo many books I want to read before I can't read anymore. I have to do something to limit my exposure. ;-)

I wonder if they pick a different 100 books. We may have more than 100 books in common and that is why it varies.

That is my best guess.

Megalion | 484 comments Elizabeth (Alaska) wrote: "Some things, like dystopian or Christian fiction will give me a heads up that perhaps we don't have much reading in common."

Lol, I have a lot of dystopia in my read column. Probably not Christian fiction. I don't pay attention to whether or not a book is considered that. The former is obvious though.

I havent yet done this because ive had company for a few days and am limiting my time online, plus id rather do this on my pc and ive mostly been on my tablet.

message 40: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments I'm at 81% with you Anita, since I added more reviews. A lot of my reviews did not transfer over from Shelfari, so I have been adding them one by one when I have time.

message 41: by Ladyslott (new)

Ladyslott | 1880 comments I did the Book Compatibility and found I am 86% with you and 86% with Nicole R. It's funny because I find that Nicole and I have so many books and reactions in common, yet when I looked through it turns out you and I agree much more than disagree. Interesting to compare, and I'll look more later but I am on vacation now and will look into more comparisons when I get home.

lol - I thought of you first here on PBT... though it seems to be higher with annapi at 89%

A lot of 60s & 70s with the rest of the group and most others, it seems...

message 43: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12949 comments Okay - I did it at 4 in the morning, and had some really interesting results! I am in the 70's with like 10-15 of you guys, including Nicole, Kristel, Anita, Megalian, Susie, and at 78-79% with Paige, Booknblues, Lynn. Hit a whopping 82% with the new Jennifer Pope, who I could tell I liked instantly. Both her, and her books. My lowest, (68%) was Olivermagnus, which surprised me, because I predicted her at one of the highest. But a brief glance told me that many of my ratings didn't transfer. Another surprising discovery - where was Jen on my friend list? I didn't even see her, which surprised me. She was one of my first five friends on both Shelfari and I thought Goodreads as well. Actually to note, Kristel was my absolute first friend on both, but Jen was right after. Where are you, Jen, are we not linked? I hear your voice daily, even without letting the car windows down, or showing up at a conference. But we should seal the deal. Your kiddo in the picture is a cutie too...

Lol. We are friends (of course :). We should try and meet up sometime. I think we were 70% -- sounds about right. I think we often read the same types of books but do differ in how we rate them.

I often keep an eye out for you when I go to bookstores! Thanks for the comment about my daughter. I wanted to confirm you meant me before responding.

:) I work in the same field as you too. I'm a research coordinator in the psych dept at Yale. We work with the parents of kids with CD and ODD. You are a psychologist? Or social worker? Even back at Shelfari, I used the Books in Common feature to screen friend requests if I don't actually know a person.. I've used it here too.
