Yay! For some now inexplicable reason, I gave it only 4 stars. But I looked at my review, and if I were going to second-guess myself, I think I got it wrong.

Amy | 12949 comments AHH! The lovely Jennifer Pope is also a psychologist, and local to the Northeast! My 82%. Paige, a former Shelfarian and new PBT, is also a therapist, and we have enjoyed sharing some books as well. The other Jen, we should find each other in the Starbucks next to Barnes and Nobles in Natick. Maybe bring the little ones. Other Jen, we are %70, but I forgot to mention the lovely Barbara is another %79. Not going to APA. But I actually present around here every year, or every other year or so, at various sites. In fact, I had the opportunity to present at Grand Rounds at Mass General this year. That was unexpected and exciting. Recently wrote a paper that I presented around. Taking a break to throw bar mitzvahs and things, but my next paper is actually on Mutual Dissociation, for anyone who might be so interested. Currently reading Queen of the Night… And have some exciting "in's" from the library. Speaking of, given that we are in the same library system, its possible, Local Jen, that we have literally held the same book. Eerie, huh?

Since you and I often have similar tastes, I checked and it said we are at 87%.

Now I need to go check Nicole D since she is my book twin. And also Nicole R since she is mg evil book twin.

ETA: So interestingly enough the Nicoles got a 76% and 75% respectively. I have no idea how this conclusion could be reached.

That's so strange since I'm also highest with Rachel but lowest with you.

Blueberry (blueberry1) I tested compatibility with a nonPBT friend. We only had one book listed that we had both read and gave a similar score. It matched us at 100%. ha ha ha

Elizabeth (Alaska) Blueberry wrote: "It matched us at 100%. ha ha ha"

Of course, It says Your tastes are ___% similar for the books you both rated.

Jennifer Pope (jenjunum) | 902 comments I should say I'm not a psychologist but work in the field. Deferred continuing school while my husband got his PhD (I supported us, provided health insurance, etc). Plus I didn't know which direction to exactly take after undergrad (not sure I do now, so it's nice to bounce around a bit). But I can design a study and make it work. :) funny that we are all close by! And with similar book tastes. Good luck with Queen of the Night! It didn't click with me. I felt like maybe I should have liked it but I just didn't.

message 59: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12949 comments Wait for review... I am enjoying it, but have some critiques of it myself. It can be jumpy, and therefore confusing. I plan to say it has a haunting dreamlike quality, and that can feel like the feel of it. Also that you can get lost in it, a doc fused and disoriented. Maybe even a little angry/pissy. Unrelated to quen of the night, but i have a patient in 2 minutes. I am a %75 with Sara. Gotta go!

message 60: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11719 comments I just tried a bunch of people who have posted in this thread (though not everyone), and my highest matches were at 82% with about 4 people: Rachel, Denizen, Karin, Annapi. Karin was a surprise! Also one person at 81%: Jen (also a surprise!). Everyone else I tried was 70-some %.

message 61: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11719 comments I've tried a couple more people (who haven't posted in this thread), and my highest match now is Ellen at 85%.

Kimber (kimberwolf) | 845 comments Two whom I have more than 100 books in common with and 81% similarity in ratings are Annapi and Kate.

That is a surprise. I'm not sure how they calculate the match because when I looked at our ratings side by side, we seem to rate very differently. Interesting!

message 64: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (margarette) | 378 comments I compared with just ones who posted in this thread, friends or not, and my results are:
Denizen at 86 percent is the HIGHEST
AnnaPi at 81 percent is 2nd Highest
Barbara and Jennifer are 80 percent each
Linda S and Susie are 79 percent each
Tien is 77 percent
Jen and BooknBlues are 76 percent each
LibraryCin and Book Concierge are 75 percent each
Megalion is 73 percent
Anita, JoLene and Rachel are 72 percent each
Elizabeth Alaska is 71 percent
Karin is 67 percent and Amy is 63 percent

This just goes to show that this measure is just a bit wonky. We have 230 books in common, so it depends on which it picks out for you at a time...When I check our rating it came to 85%...but it only picked 60 books, some times it picks 90 and sometimes 100.

Elizabeth (Alaska) You can select which shelves to compare - see upper right. You can also compare by the default, or by rating.

I do wonder. When I look at the list (no matter who I was comparing to) half of them are ones that one or the other of us (or even both) haven't even read yet!

message 68: by annapi (new)

annapi | 5505 comments As I go through the comparisons, I've been updating my books and filling in reviews for the books I know I've read but haven't reviewed on GR (since my Shelfari stuff did not all transfer over). So a few of those comparisons with me will have changed (usually gone higher).

I was surprised at 76, so 85 may be more accurate. One thing I thought weird is that it's supposed to be comparing rated books, if i understand correctly, but often the book had not yet been read by one or the other.

That sounds more like it Cindy. I would have expected us to be more similar than 75 percent. Same for BC.

I checked and you and I are also 88 percent. I would say we must read the same mindless trash, but we don't seem to have a lot of books in common. Just one more way this comparison thing is perplexing. It's fun though, addictive even.

message 75: by Margaret (new)

Margaret (margarette) | 378 comments Maybe Shelfari is still importing to some of our shelves and that's throwing the comparison program a little off.

message 76: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9297 comments Sara wrote: "Since you and I often have similar tastes, I checked and it said we are at 87%. "

Honestly, while I don't think we always reach for the same type of books, I do think that when we read the same book, we often really have a very, very similar reaction . . .so if you just restricted us to works of literary fiction - - I think we would be even closer.

Ha ha, that's too funny. My gut feel is that if you like a book, and I read it, then I often really enjoy it as well. But not vice versa! So maybe I've just picked up more of your books than you have picked up of mine (which if you think about it is likely given how much and how fast you read, lol).

message 78: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9297 comments Margarette wrote: "Maybe Shelfari is still importing to some of our shelves and that's throwing the comparison program a little off."

I have to say I haven't finished with importing all my reviews, but I think most of my ratings made it.

I think I need to try to do these comparisons just using the "read" shelves and not all the shelves -- that might be more accurate?

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Sara wrote: "So interestingly enough the Nicoles got a 76% and 75% respectively. I have no idea how this conclusion could be reached. ..."

This seems odd and counter-intuitive. Does this function just compare books that we have in common or does it do some fancy calculus with our respective ratings.

We do read some similar books....we just rate them very differently...

Ha ha and you and I are 78% compatible in books. Something is wrong with how they determine this. We do read the same sorts of books but pretty consistently (with a few Atwood exceptions) rate completely opposite.

Agreed. I read a lot of fantasy, though not as much as in the past, and if that is factored in our compatability plummets.

So I went and compared just our "read" shelves and our compatability actually increased to 78%.
