3.5 stars - A frustrating protagonist and annoyingly unknowable love interest make this a difficult series to like, even when it is nicely original, with elements of brilliant writing

Faefever is book 3 in Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, which is told from the perspective of a single female protagonist - Mac, a SidheSeer, a human who can see the fae (fairies). Faefever is book 3 in Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series, which is told from the perspective of a single female protagonist - Mac, a SidheSeer, a human who can see the fae (fairies). The book picks up directly after it’s predecessor Bloodfever and ends on massive cliffhanger that requires you to read the next book Dreamfever to find out what happens, (view spoiler) and the first five books of the series deal with a single over-arching story arc and therefore are not suitable for reading standalone.

In Mac’s universe the fae and humanity have been separated for eons, but someone is working to pull down the walls between the dimension of faery and humanity, letting out the evil Unseelie with disastrous consequences for Seelie fae and human alike. As the most powerful SidheSeer Mac is hunting down the Sinsar Dubuh- an ancient fae relic written by the Unseelie King and filled with ultimate evil, it’s the only thing that can close the borders between fae and humanity, but it has also developed a sentience and has it’s own agenda. Mac doesn’t know in whom she can trust, be it the mysterious and dark Jericho Barrons who is mercenary at best, yet seems to keep on saving her, the Seelie fae prince V’Lane, who serves the Seelie Queen and has his own agenda, the other SidheSeers who may or may not have been responsible for letting the evil sentient book loose on the world and a mysterious Druidic set from Scotland. On the other side is the Lord Master, once fae, now human and intent on ripping apart the world in his quest to retrieve his immortality.

A lot happens plot wise in this novel and the war with the unseelie definitely ramps up, however the character development is at best glacial and at times regressive, which is incredibly frustrating and makes it very difficult to relate to the characters in a positive manners. There’s a lot of violence and violence towards women, with instances of rape, both physical and psychic and physical violence towards women from many of the supporting (and potential love interests) characters that at times is disturbing and I’d question how necessary it is especially when attributed to Barrons. I don’t like powerful female characters that always fall into the victim mould and unfortunately that’s what happens an awful lot in this series to Mac. To date she mostly whines about how awful her lot is, fails to make any decisions on whom to trust and puts herself in difficult and dangerous situations she’s not prepared for and then requires rescuing.

On the plus side the world building is great and the universe and how Moning has decided to frame it is a refreshing take on the genre. However, I can’t help but feel like the story is being strung out over five books when it could have been more impactful if it was condensed into a trilogy. It’s well written, but I find the use of blatant cliffhangers very annoying and manipulative, I’ve read other single protagonist UF series with a multi book arc that retain readers interest, move the story along, yet avoid the use of too many cliffhangers.

If you’ve read this far in the series, like me you are probably invested enough in the universe and its characters to want to read on and find out how it ends, but you’re probably not that happy about it. I’m just glad that I wasn’t reading this series as each book was published or I’d have been really peeved. ...more

My favorite in the series so far! I'm loving Mac's transformation and her resilience in this new world of hers! Barrons can still do no wrong in my eyes...even when he's an ass I love him! I was glued to the pages and refuse to believe the ending had come when I got to the last page. I'm just thankful that I am reading the series now and don't have to wait an entire year to find out what happens next! I think it's safe to say I have the Fever! ...more

Crazy cliffhanger ... moving directly to book 4. Thankfully, I started this series after all the books were in print. Be sure when you read this book, you have Dreamfever in hand.
Still no clue who Jericho Barrens is and I am still unsure if I like him. I desperately want him to be a good guy, but I think I know who or rather what he is?? To me there was a big WTF moment with the cake. ...more

I liked this book, but it was definitely more of a transitional book that the first 2 in the series. More details were revealed of the main and some sub- characters and the object Mac is looking for, but other than that not a lot else really went on.

I know a lot of other people who have reviewed this book were disgusted by the ending. I have to say while I didn't like it, it terms of what happened to Mac, I can just only hope that she manages to turn it round and become stronger because of it. ...more
