Well! That was a fun and refreshing way to round out the month! This story was just brilliant! Liesl, Will, Mo and Po were all so wonderful and you could not help but cheer them on! It didn't hurt that the audiobook was performed by Jim Dale, whose performance of The Night Circus I enjoyed so much last year. He even used a similar voice for the character of Po as for dear, silly Widget. This very much reminded me of a mash-up of Holly Black (specifically Doll Bones or The Spiderwick Chronicles) ...more

[June 20, 2016] This was quite a strange rereading experience. Two years after my original read, I came back to discover that this story resonated so much with me originally because I read it at the right time. It is a story about grieving that found me after a time of personal grief and I loved it. Perhaps this idea is best summed up by a quote from this very book:

"People need other people to feel things for them," she said. "It gets lonely to feel things all by yourself."

This was a beautiful story. Oliver is such a hit or miss author for me and I’m glad this ended up being a hit. Liesl’s journey to bring her father’s ashes back to her family home to lay him down to rest was heartfelt and filled with great characters. I loved this one.

I ended up liking this book overall. I wasn't blown away by it, but it was definitely enjoyable and relatable and I think it makes an excellent children's book. That being said, as an adult, it was a bit difficult to look past its trope-iness. I found the characters to have pretty much zero personality other than the tropes they fit into, which made it difficult to feel invested in their problems at times.
