A wonderful, human story about choices, family and dreams.
Bought this because of the HELLA awesome opening:

Story 8 in my 24 Days of Shorts
This was phenomenal and I should have been prepared for that because so many of my friends said it was phenomenal but I was still blown away by the emotional KAPOW that Kowal packed into this short story. Wow!

It’s a hard thing to look at something you want and to know that the right choice is to turn it down.

I didn't intend to start my day off by weeping, but I'm not sorry I did. Not sure what the point is of the Wizard of Oz reference, but this was a deeply affecting story that had more to do with human relationships than actual space stuff.

The ties between the science fiction and the personal worked a lot better for me in the context of this short story than in The Calculating Stars. It's simple and imperfect, but touching.
