I listened to this on audio and initially found it hard to fix the main characters in my head so ordered a hardback copy from the library and made a list of all the players. I enjoyed the setting and the build up to the murder.

I didn't really enjoy the last few chapters of the book and felt that Fen did not come out of the whole affair very well.

4 STARS | Crispin's writing is a big reminder of how literate and literary so many of the mystery writers of the Golden Age were. No writing at a third-grade level back then. Though I consider myself well-read, I confess many of the references went "whoosh" over my head, from Shakespeare (the reference to the Gilded Fly) to more esoteric texts.
