So good! I just e-mailed all of my coworkers and told them they must read this book ASAP! August has been homeschooled his whole life because of the many surgeries he has gone through to correct numerous severe birth defects. Now as he enters fifth grade, he prepares to go to regular school for the first time. Auggie is just like everyone else underneath, but on the surface he definitely stands out in a crowd. As one character puts it "Let's face it... the universe was not kind to Auggie Pullman

Great read. The protagonist is only in 5th grade, but it wasn't a younger grades book. Auggie looks very different from everyone else because of a condition he was born with. He's never gone to school because of it, but his parents decide he needs to go to middle school. This is his story. The world of middle school, the thoughtless comments, the cliques are all there--including the parents of some of the kids. It's told from varying viewpoints, and I really liked that. This is a beautiful book. I hoping it will get some recognition this coming week when the Newbery award and honors are announced.

I thought I had posted this one already- It was amazing and really goes to show what a difference people can make. One mean act or one kind act can start a domino effect.
Don't recommend the audio version though- tried to listen to it after I read it and I just didn't like how it was done. ...more
