I'm filled with shame for not having read these fantastic short stories earlier. Instead, I just focused on reading Ken Liu's translations of Cixin Liu, and Ken Liu's own enormous epic fantasy, ignoring, (wrongly-so) his award-winning short fiction.

I was delighted by almost all the short, sometimes strange, fiction that filled the first pages.

The Bookmaking Species of Select Species tickled all my librophile instincts.

"'The Paper Menagerie' is the first work of fiction, of any length, to have swept the Nebula, Hugo, and World Fantasy Awards." I cried. OK, usually when I say "I cried" I mean one tear escaped my eye... This story made me cry a whole bunch of tears. A story of the disconnect between parents and children, the gap between cultures, and magical origami.

Moving short story, but sort of predictable. And where's the SF?
Read Ray Bradbury if you want more of this sort of thing, Doug and Tom etc....

Walking the thin line between being maudlin and staying interesting, this is a story only a writer sure in his craft can write. Impressive! After reading military SF for the last few months, this is a refreshing change. A reminder that I am still in touch with my humanity.

I read the title story years ago. Wonderful story. Today I learned it was the first work of fiction to win the Hugo, the Nebula, AND the World Fantasy Award.

I want to get back and read the other stories in the collection.
