4 stars. I went in with no expectations and I was rewarded in the end with a very unique and beautifully written story.
I loved the writing. It’s very lush and scenic and it had me sucked into the world and the setting of the palace. The pacing is even and the plot moves at a good pace. Not too fast but not slow enough to where I lost interest at any point. The plot isn’t the most original but Ngan puts su ...more

Ooh this was a good read! I'm happy to be seeing more Asian fantasy books, especially when they include demons. The imagery is so cool and the lore makes the story compelling and interesting. Lei is a great character to follow, she's a regular girl who gets chosen for a terrible fate just because of her eyes. Forcing young women to be the king's concubines is awful and I admire that Lei fought back and didn't just submit.

This book is absolutely beautiful and I'm so happy to have reread it,
Some thoughts
Lei and Wren's relationship - beautiful slow burn. I'm not even a romance reader at all, but this was just right to me :) Great balance between the plot and the romance.
Lei's character development was definitely 'shown-not-told.' Even though she is sometimes lost herself, it all fits with her as a character. Really beautifully written.

I am actually blown away by this book. I always go into a book with such high hopes and, not once have I ever been truly let down. This one was as amazing as I thought it was going to be with it's Asian Inspired stories. There are a lot of trigger moments in it but, they haven't affected me like they would a lot of people I know. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
