My father was in the US Air Force when I was a kid. This meant that we often found ourselves on long road trips across the country and, since this was before smartphones, the whole family would listen to the classic rock station over the car’s sound system. This book reminds me of all the good times my family spent together and all the quarters us kids won when we correctly guessed what band was playing over the radio. I've had this book on my TBR Mountain for a while, and despite hearing a number of great things about it, I was hesitant to start it simply because my knowledge of rock bands is rather limited. Putting aside this concern, I finally dove in and was pleasantly surprised to find I didn't need to have an extensive knowledge of rock bands in order to enjoy the book, the characters or the story. YAY! Would knowing more about musicians or rock bands improve my reading experience --? Perhaps -- but even ...more

4.5 stars. A really great read. Loved the characters and their motivation. I would love to read more about Saga. Excited to read the next book in the series. My only knock is a weird complaint, at times I wished the story would be a bit shorter...others I wish he would flesh out a bit more. Maybe it's just me? Read this book if you like fantasy at all. ...more

Short Review: Def rec, especially if you like humorous fantasy novels and the music essays of Chuck Klosterman

Long(er) Review: The good news: Likable, distinct characters set in an interesting world. The book is somehow very sweet at its heart, despite initial appearances. I enjoyed the conceit of this band of mercenaries being parallel to a rock band. They get the boys back together and go on one final tour.
