When they teach you public speaking, there is a concept called "ho-hum". This is a brief statement at the very starting point of the speech, sufficiently interesting so that the audience will immediately sit up and take notice. It is the "hook" with which the speaker snares them.

A slice of American gothic and an everyday tale of mass murder and agoraphobia. The plot is pretty well known, although the plot of the recent film may confuse this as it bears limited relation to the book. It must be said that Jackson can write well and can set a scene. Merricat is one of my favorite narrators. I unfortunately predicted the big reveal pretty early, but it didn't make the book any less enjoyable or disturbing.

At first I was thinking that this wasn't very freaky. But as time, and pages, went on, the tininess of the world of Constance, Merricat and Julian started to really creep me out. Those townspeople. Creepy Charles. And the way after the big incident that their world contracts even further.
