Foundation is interesting but not compelling. The themes of religion, trade negotiation and political upheaval would have benefitted from further development. It felt like I'd read a detailed outline of a book rather than the finished product. Perhaps there is further development in the rest of the series, however, I haven't been left with the desire to find out. ...more

Predicting big events in the future by using statistical analysis of the past is an interesting idea, but there is too much here I don't like -- characters are stereotypes, story repeats itself, and Great Men with boundless egos who take counsel from no one come along just when needed to ensure historical forces converge in the way the need to.

Shelves: sci-fi-steampunk
I was not expecting to like this book much but honestly? Solid 4, tending to 5. As it is not character driven the engagement was a bit tricky with me but yeah, it works. A bit fatalistic with the math can predict everything I have to say.
