Checking out the Goodreads reviews after just finishing this. People saying they didn’t ‘get’ the characters and that nothing of consequence happens that is even remotely scary? Did we all read the same book?

I literally finished this in a white heat over two nights; during the day while working I could not stop thinking about poor Eleanor’s agonising descent into madness, what is real or imagined along the way, and who – or what – abetted her inevitable dissolution.

This scared the bejesus out o

A wonderful psychological thriller just perfect for Halloween. Strange events keep happening in Hill House that indicate the house is haunted. But by whom? A past occupant? The house itself? Or one of the guests with telekinetic powers? This story is scary primarily because it leaves the reader in constant suspense. I kept waiting for it to turn into Stephen King's The Shining, but Jackson's psychological analysis of the house guests was a different and very satisfying approach to the horror of ...more

I really wanted to like this book. I don’t know if it was the pacing, the characters, the genre, or just the story itself but something about it was just not that engaging. The tension just wasn’t there for me. I was confused for a good bit of the time, the character dynamics were all over the place (which is part of the story, but like I could barely follow it). Just overall not a huge fan, sorry.

Beautiful, beautiful. Weirdly saucy too, featuring a love scene that basically seems snuck in, for the 1950s. Jackson is such a good writer. For some reason the story lost my attention in the last 1/3 but who even cares.
