I grew up watching the movie. A movie I've seen countless times and will probably see countless more times. And I loved it.

Now the book. After the theatrical release of Oz The Great and Powerful, I had a desire to read the original classic. Dorothy Gale, a child living in Kansas with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry, is taken to the land of Oz in a tornado and her house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East.

If I was 8 or 9 I would surely have given it 5+ stars. But I'm not. As a child's story it is

I have never read the Wizard of Oz, and thought I might read the whole series. I must admit, I liked this so much better than the movie, which I never liked. The Wicked Witch of the West and the Winged monkeys always frightened me. I like that the Witch was not so powerful, and the Winged monkeys were actually fun, loving creatures. I will continue to read the series.
