Everyone who enjoys Star Trek or Star Wars probably owes a huge debt to Frank Herbert. Dune preceded both of them, and was the first sci-fi book to prove that sci-fi could appeal to the masses, not just a small group. It is foundation, and it fathered a plethora of copy-cats and sincere imitators. In that regard, I bow to Mr. Herbert. It was interesting enough to make me follow through to the end...I wanted to know how Paul would pull this off, where it would leave him, and what would happen to ...more

This took a while to get into, and I had a hard time keeping the characters straight for the first quarter of it. It's a fine story -- just a little drawn out compared to more recent stories.

The story focuses heavily on culture and customs. The desert world centers on the scarcity and pricelessness of water. (I was thirsty the entire time I listened to this.) In science fiction, Dune is often said to be what The Lord of the Rings is to fantasy – the originator, all-encompassing, vast and incredibly detailed. I could very well see why. Dune takes a long while, almost the first third of the book, to introduce us very deliberately to the characters and intimate workings of the world. But this is a mere scratch on the surface of a larger canon – the Dune series stretches across more than 18 novels.
