Oh wow! First of all, Kafka's writing style was flawless. I read A Hunger Artist by him last year, and it was pretty disturbing. But The Metamorphosis was such a disturbing story on so many levels: (view spoiler)

Kafka’s autobiographical rage against the machine. Gregor was transformed overnight, which he accepted. But as a sizable beetle he was changed beyond recognition. As his condition deteriorated from abuse and continued alienation, he was ultimately discarded by the family who should have loved and cared for him. He is subjected to a brutal and thankless end; an end to an existence that was a thankless chore.
