This book might be unique in that it not only claims to have no hero, but in fact has no hero. What it does have is a cast of duplicitous, weak or inane characters, none of whom stir much in the way of either pity, empathy, or affinity. It also has the bad girl to end all bad girls, Miss Rebecca Sharp. I doubt anyone would argue that Becky is not the most interesting character in the book, and while some might admire the good little Amelia, few could actually like her.

#14 in the chronological McCrum read.... and I believe this is the third 5 star book in a row! Many of this period are rereads for me including Vanity Fair. Terrific book....
An explanation of my star rating.
5= Truly cream of the crop. Amazing. In a wondrous realm of its own
4= Special and well written. More than good...maybe even a great book, but not a rare 5 star wonder.
3= Moments of brilliance, a pleasure to read. I'd recommend it.
2= An average "so-so" book that didn't shine... since I rarel ...more

Very long story but pretty great. I feel sorry for Becky, she was a modern woman whose life went to shit because she was much smarter than the men around her.
