What Members Thought
Somehow this book just captured my heart. The outcasts isolated in the house in Cerulean Sea are very charming (Lucy the Antichrist, Sal the shapeshifter, Talia the lady gnome, Chauncey the indescribable, etc).
I thought in the beginning that this will be a cliche, a story about a change of heart (a cold hearted government official found his family at last)- but turned out it's very warm, well written, with a touch of humor and lots of heartbreaking moments.

This is the warm and fuzzy book we all need right now! Reading this book feels like a safe and comforting hug when the world feels scary. T.J. Kline’s novel defies category: it feels like YA, with lessons to learn and hope to offer, but the protagonist is a 40-year-old man. Basically, this is perfect for adults who love YA novels; if you’re a Debbie Downer who only wants something dark and dreary, this is not for you.

I really loved a lot of things about this book. I loved the message of tolerance and finding family. I loved the all the kids in the book, they had such distinct personalities and it was difficult not to fall in love with them and their dreams and hopes.
I did not find the main character, Linus Baker, as special as everyone in the book seemed to make of him. I also wish there could have been more background of the world that we find ourselves in. We are dropped into a world where magical youth ( ...more

Two warnings from the beginning of this book. One: if you start it and you aren't sure how everyone is crowing it is magic, make sure you make it chapters four-five, and the children, before you consider DNFing. Two: This book will worm its way right into your heart and it will never move out.

A low level functionary for DICOMY (the department for the care of magical youth) is dispatched to evaluate an orphanage on a remote island. What he learns changes everything. Heartwarming and at time hilarious, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It would be great for older teens who are HP fans. I felt like I was taking a little vacation in a quirky paradise.
