It's the Bolshevik Revolution, and Count Alexander Rostov is sentenced to house arrest at the Metropol Hotel in Moscow, Russia. He remains within the walls of the hotel for decades, both barred and buffered from the tumultuous history of Soviet Russia. Five-year plans, Stalin, World War II, Khrushev, and the postwar nuclear race all get passing mention, but the focus remains on the small events that make up the Count's days: the reading of a thick book, his weekly shave, the selection of the pro ...more

I hate this book. Hate it with a bit H-A-T-E.

The only reason it is getting a 2 is because I finished it. And the only reason I finished it was because it was a book club suggestion and I couldn't finish last months and forced myself with this one. Plus I own both the audio and the hardback and refused to quit when I invested 2 times into it!

I wasn't thrilled with the ending and events leading up to it, although the bits of intrigue planted far before the end do pay off fairly well. Otherwise, I really enjoyed it. My one regret is liste ...more

I know everyone in the world loved this book, but I found it deadly boring. A few nice turns of phrase, but for me this book just dragged on and on.

A great read! Excellent plot about post-Revolutionary Russia. So many good plot points and great characters. Lots of people to cheer for.

I tried so hard to like this one. Perhaps it's just not my kind of read? So many 4-5 star reviews and I just don't understand the hype. I even started it over 5 times. I forced myself to finish it just to say I did. ...more
