What Members Thought

I am kicking myself because I didn't get to this book sooner! An older lady--a patron at the library where I work--recommended this to me a while ago, and I just finished it today. I understand her enthusiasm--how excited she was to talk and share with someone about this book! It's not one you will forget in a hurry. It's more than a ghost story... it's like an "undead" story. If I had been reading it, this would have been one of those books that I would have found hard to put down. As it was, I

It was okay. Just really slow.

This book was selected as the January read for the 2017 PopSugar Reading Challenge category "A book with one of the four seasons in the title." Since my book club's selection for January also had a season in the title (The Summer Before the War), I opted to use the book club book to check off that category and used The Winter People to check off the "A book set in two different time periods" category. This book kind of reminded me of those R.L. Stine Fear Street novels I used to read—something horrible lives in the woods, people are dying or disappearing, and there is an old diary slowly revealing the truth throughout the novel. Not really what I expected or wanted. There were some unanswered questions at the end and not enough emotional depth for me, but it was interesting.

I'd give this 3.5 stars. It was well-written, but the paranormal/horror genre is not my typical cup of tea. I have an overactive imagination already, so planting ideas of people in the backyard (mine is overgrown) kind of gets to me and prevents me from sleeping at night. The book was not overly spooky or gory or graphic, but enough that I didn't want to read it at night. Thanks, book club.
