a couple of years ago, i read most of the third-wave feminist and post-feminist sex-worker-positive books available. this book, however, came out in 2006, well after my interest in the industry (& my own career) had waned, so it never made its way across my nightstand. recently, diablo cody wrote a script for a movie called juno, and this movie's release reminded me that i had never tackled candy girl.

fortunately, cody skips a lot of the critical theory, politicizing, philosophizing, and intense

Not knowing much about stripping or exotic dancing as I approached this Valentine's Day present, I wasn't sure if this memoir was going to rely soley on it's "hook," or if it was going to be simple and sincere writing in wild circumstances. It was a little of both, and I loved it more for its flaws. Stripping in Minnesota was never something I ever thought was a career choice, but Diablo Cody shows the claustrophobia she felt at her desk job tempered by the commonplace naughtiness that inhabits ...more

Well-written but patronizing. I enjoyed Juno, but I found this interesting but also repugnant at the same time. What an exploitative industry!

This was a relatively short read...I didn't love it, but I don't know that it is necessarily a book that you love. It was an interesting insight into the sex industry, and I like Diablo Cody's writing style--it's very personal and cozy, like you're hearing a friend tell a story at a party. ...more

Juno was hilarious and being curious about how one would go from a Minnesota stripper to a world renowned screenwriter, I bought this book.

Cody braves the down and dirty Minnesota strip clubs and has no qualms about sharing her experiences. Some of her insights are terrifying, but to her credit, Cody is never judgmental about those that inhabit the "sex trade". The only exception being the owners of strip clubs and their exploitative policies, which of course surprises no one.

The only thing th

This was the first book in a long time that actually made me laugh out loud. Thank God I read most of it at home, where my boyfriend knows enough to ignore me when I do crazy stuff like this, and not at work where lots of people would have looked at me like I was insane. It was a fluff read all the way, but highly entertaining nonetheless. A warning--it's kind of raunchy. If you're offended by bad language and sexual situations, well--why in hell did you pick this up? It's a book about stripping ...more

This book was fun, but far too short. I loved reading the stories of the different girls that Diablo Cody met behind the scenes as a stripper and I loved hearing about how the places are run. I think it could have been fleshed out a lot more and have been even more enjoyable, but I quite liked it nonetheless.

While I love Diablo Cody's voice, by about two-thirds of the way through the book, I was ready for her "adventurous" year to be over. I should have known that she would push the envelope! I think I would give her voice and her writing 5 stars, but the subject matter brings it down a little for me. ...more

interesting because it's about a girl that strips in minnesota. not very well written, but interesting. mainly for the use of slang and random pop-culture references. ...more
