Popsugar Reading Challenge 2024: A book that was turned into a musical.
Well, this book is clearly called a modern classic for good reason. It handles so many heavy issues (race, gender, sexuality, white saviourism, class...) yet never preaches. The characters feel so genuine that you feel deeply for all of them. I love the movie, and I cannot believe it has taken me so long to read the book. I'm so glad that I finally did. It's heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Quite an achievement, and quite a delight. Definitely a classic everyone should read.

I am not a religious person, and I don't consider myself to be particularly spiritual, but something about Shug's definition of God struck a chord with me. I have never really attempted to articulate my beliefs as such, but if I did I think they would be something like this.

I really loved this movie and I've been meaning to read this book for ages. I never realized that it consists of a series of letters. Your heart breaks for Celie and Nettie but the their faith that they will see each other again is strong. their humor is apparent despite their circumstances.
