What Members Thought

I was going to write that I enjoyed this book, but that would be a poor choice of words. This is the first Holocaust novel I've ever read; it's a subject I've always shied away from. After I finished this book, I found myself reading up on Josef Mengele...it's too bad the subject matter isn't fiction. Human beings are certainly capable of being horrible creatures. There is so much about the nature of man alone that make this book a worthwhile read.

This is a very good book. I read it while we were on vacation in Houston. I read some at the galleria while waiting for my family and cried and cried at the Starbucks there. Truly terrifying. I think that most people should read this to catch a glimpse of what human beings are capable of enduring and the evil that we apparently have the capacity for containing within ourselves.

i don't know why i don't rate this book higher. i think because i had read so many survivor testimonies (yes, even in 8th grade) that i wasn't as . . . shocked at the story as i could have been. for most people, aside from anne frank, this is the first book they read about auschwitz. it's their first introduction to the horrors of the concentration camp.

Amazing, amazing book. read this in parallel with Slaughterhouse Five, and this was a million times better. The comparison probably has something to do with how much I loved this book, but I am really glad I saw this on one of my friend's lists and decided to give it a try.

I can't believe I've never read this book. Short, powerful, heartbreaking. A must-read for everyone, not just those of us who have had family who experienced this.

As a historian and a teacher this book is exactly what I expected. That's not a bad thing, it was VERY good, and very well written. I am very glad I read it and am excited to bring it into my classroom this fall.

I first read this in high school, I picked it up in college, and I'm sure I'll reread it in the future. It's a book that everyone should read, whether you're interested in the Holocaust or not.
