I waited many years to finally read an Agatha Christie novel. And it didn't quite live up to my expectations. It was good but most of the plot was, well, pointless. Thankfully it was short and fast read so that I could get it over with.

Full disclosure: I have never read anything by Agatha Christie before. I am not really a fan of mysteries, and how I felt about this is how I feel about most mysteries. I liked the characters, I liked the storyline and the lead up but when it really comes down to whodunnit, I just don't care. Are you supposed to? I would have been just as content with the story if I never knew who killed Mrs. Inglethorpe (with poison in her bedchamber!).

I was inspired to read this after watching some of the BBC Poirot mysteries, with the amazing David Suchet as Poirot. This is fun. A literal English country manor full of people motivated to commit murder. Hastings is delightfully clueless. I liked it a lot.
The only drawback, as in other Christie novels, is that the solution requires knowledge of very period-specific things that have vanished from modern life. Makes it frustrating if you're keen to solve it before the end. ...more
