What Members Thought

Sometimes a man get kill because he look at another man in a way that he didn’t like. And killing don’t need no reason. This is ghetto. Reason is for rich people. We have madness.
Okay, no lie, this book was AMAZING. And the most amazing thing about it? Is that I hated it, and almost gave up on it, until finally I stopped hating it, and ultimately I could hardly stand to set it down, and when I finished it I was sad, because it was over. I can NOT believe how fully this book redeemed itself. ...more

It took me a long time to get through this one, almost two months. I had to take breaks, honestly. The density, violence, multiple narrators, and the Jamaican patois were all challenging for me. I'm glad I saw it through, though-- the last 100 or so pages provide a rich reward, and pull the previous 600 pages together with a clarity, humor, irony, and warmth that is nothing but brilliant.
This has made me painfully aware of how very little I know about Jamaican history, or any of the Caribbean, ...more

I FINALLY FINISHED IT!
This book took me 8 months to read, possibly because it's only the second book that's ever given me nightmares. There were times I had to put it down for days to dull the memory of its graphic violence. But it's worth the struggle and the nightmares, because it's all those words people use to describe it - "sweeping," "epic." T ...more

Just announced as Man Booker Prize winner!! And I just finished his The Book of Night Women, which is still rattling around in my head haunting me.

Wow, this was long! I listened to it at 1.5x and it still was one of the longest audiobooks ever. That isn’t a bad thing, it was just an intense book. I really wish I had read this with others because there are some parts I really want to discuss. There were definitely some tough parts of this book, the violence for sure was hard.
