oh, crazy women who commit suicide and come to new york! there was a lot i could relate to here, and a lot i couldn't.
i think what frustrated me most was that i read this, and then her unabridged journals came out, and it didn't seem to match up. which shocked me. i mean, here is sylvia, supposed to be depressed depressed depressed, and she's talking incessantly about boys? but that's a different book . . .
this book has become so classic it's almost a mockery of itself and it's hard to live up ...more

Pro tip - if at all possible, do not read this book all at once. I read it in two sittings over a weekend (because the library wouldn't let me renew it again) and came out feeling distinctly wobbly. However, if you start reading it, it may not be possible not to gulp down the whole thing. It's that good.

[Review from 2004.] I really liked this. I'd only read Plath's poetry before, and loved it, but this was different and great. Very Salinger-esque, actually. A fast, wonderful read.
