I read this book in high school and hated it ... but I don't remember why, so I'm going to tackle it again
OK ... finished it again. And this time I had to admit it wasn't horrible. I'm sure I didn't get all the symbolism and theme messages that were there, but it was definitely a story of the struggle between life and death, between man and nature, between success and failure. I think this is the first book I've finished by Ernest Hemingway. He may not be for me. But I'm glad I got through it. A lot of description. I expect in context it's quite a bit more brilliant than I'm giving it credit for.
Also Donald Sutherland's reading of this was mostly good. He sounded rather exhausted most of the time, but I suppose that's the tone of the book. ...more
