What Members Thought

When I first heard about Room I was scared off by the subject matter—a woman is kidnapped and held captive in a shed for seven years. During those seven years she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son named Jack. Room came out not too long after there were a few big stories in the news about real women who had been held captive for several years. This story seemed too real and too recent so I shied away from Room. Then I listened to a discussion of the book on Slate’s Audio Book Club, and

I stumbled across this treasure in my public library while looking for an audio book.
The narration was brilliantly done with several narrators. Hearing the 5 year old voice of Jack, made the story so incredibly beautiful and poignant.

Although I found the voice of the 5 year old narrator initially quite annoying, I quickly grew fond of him. I love how the characters are flawed, and yet lovable, i couldn't help myself caring about them even at their worst, and the book will linger long in my memory. I would love to say more, but will save it so as not to give away any spoilers. Brilliant story, well told, Donoghue redeemed herself for me after "Landing", which unfortunately didn't do it for me.

I have had enough of books written from the point of view of a child. I admit there have been great books written that way (To Kill a Mockingbird, Tom Sawer) and very good books (Peace Like a River). I enjoyed those books. I never would have made it through the first half of this novel if i wasn't reading it for book club. The primary issue that made me so reluctant to continue was the grammar of the child. He was five years old and had lived in a single room with his mother for all of his life.

I put off reading this book because I figured it would be upsetting and I was right, it was but really good. I'm glad I finally read it.
