I see-sawed with my opinion of The History of Love. The beginning never really grabbed me, but I felt the story became more compelling in the last half of the book. The problem for me was the story was so convoluted, by the time it started to come together, I was already a little put off.

Krauss had some brilliant moments with the book within a book elements, but I think maybe she was trying to be too clever sometimes. The elderly Leo was too needy and pathetic. Alma was a little too precocious.

Overall, I liked this novel. I would not put it on my favorites list, nor would I strongly recommend it to anyone, but it was a nice set of interwoven stories and worth a read if you haven't anything else waiting on your nightstand. I think the publisher's description "hauntingly beautiful" is stretching it a bit.

I would recommend her husband's (jonathan safran foer) stories if you are looking for more 3 dimensional, interesting characters and similar (but more skilled) writing style.

I have to admit right off that I am a sucker for the "book within a book" concept, so this grabbed me right away. I also really love being teased, mislead and surprised by a book as long as it doesn't seem too contrived, so this one gets 5 stars from me. I found all the characters compelling and I loved all the plot twists and turns. When I finished it, I wanted to start rereading it at once because I was sure I must have missed things and I didn't want them to slip by. ...more

I am re-listening to one of my most favorite books, read by 4 narrators--including my favorite narrator, George Guidall. I am sooooo enjoying this relisten!
Just relistened again--4-25-16....I love this BOOK! "Once upon a time there was a boy who loved a girl whose laughter was a question that he wanted to spend his lifetime answering." That and the English word for elbow will always make me smile!
