4.5 stars for me.

This book is about the survival of a boy soldier and how he was able to build a life for himself even though horrible things had happened to him, and he did horrible things to others to avenge what had happened to him. I was reading this book the same time as I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, which is about a girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban because she was an advocate for education. Ishmael Beah's story of his childhood in Sierra Leone will pull at your heartstrings and make you thank God that as Americans we don't live in the middle of a war ravaged country where our family members are butchered in front of us and our children are abducted and forced to fight in the army. This is a powerful book dealing with civil wars in Africa, the ones that involve young children as soldiers. Beah was one, and now he works with the UN. Yes, the book was ghost written, but the story remains powerful for readers from middle school up. He was about 12 when he was caught up in the fighting.
