We leven in een nieuw Amerika genaamd Illea waarin het kastensysteem wordt gehanteerd. Hoe lager je cijfer, hoe hoger je aan de ladder zit. Een 1 is van het koninklijk huis. America Singer is zelf een Vijf en is een entertainer. Achten zijn de laagste kaste. Ze heeft al twee jaar een relatie met Aspen, een Zes, maar alles veranderd waarin ze bericht krijgt dat ze uitgekozen kan worden voor de Selectie, waarin je één van de 35 meisjes wordt die met prins Maxon kan trouwen. Hoewel America hier geen zin in heeft, maakt haar vriendje het uit omdat hij zichzelf te min voor haar vindt en onder druk van haar familie meld ze zich aan, want als ze naar het Paleis mag komen, krijgt haar familie een vergoeding. En inderdaad, America wordt gekozen. Hoewel ze nog steeds denkt aan Aspen, blijkt de prins ook goede kanten te hebben. De Selectie is begonnen!

Aangezien ik een kaartje heb voor het Best of YA event waarbij Kiera Cass komt, moest ik wel De Selectie van haar lezen. Ik ben totaal niet geïnteresseerd in overdreven prinsessenverhalen maar alle beoordelingen op Goodreads waren zo positief, dus wie weet, wellicht is het iets voor mij? Misschien kon ik ondanks het kleffe prinsessengedoe wat positieve aspecten uit dit verhaal halen? Nou, wel wat pluspunten heb ik kunnen vinden, maar voor de rest is dit boek totaal niets voor mij. Ik zeg het alvast: deze recensie klinkt misschien als behoorlijk veel gezeik, maar het is gewoon niet mijn boek, maar ik snap dat meisjes wel enorm van dit boek kunnen genieten.

Laten we beginnen bij de pluspunten. Zelf vond ik het politieke gedeelte van Illea wel interessant. Het lezen over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van Illea sprak me wel aan. Ook de rebellen die opduiken in het boek vond ik wel gaaf, hoewel America weinig met ze in contact kwam waardoor de spanning die erin kon zitten, nogal werd weggelaten (oeps, daar ga ik al met een minpunt...). De schrijfstijl van Kiera Cass vond ik wel goed, ze schrijft wel redelijk vlot, maar fantastisch kan ik het ook niet noemen. Dit boek las ik binnen een dag uit, dus ik kan wel zeggen dat ik makkelijk door het boek heenkwam.

Dan de minpunten.
Ten eerste het verhaal zelf. Kom op, als jongen kan ik echt niet in het verhaal komen. De prins heeft serieus een heel systeem om een vrouw te krijgen door middel van een Selectie van dames aan zijn hof? Toegegeven, die Maxon is wel een gelukkig man als er 35 verliefde dames bij je paleis komen, maar is dit niet erg overdreven? Niet alleen het systeem van de Selectie vond ik raar, maar het kastensysteem ook. Er wordt totaal geen rekening gehouden met je kennis of vaardigheden. Ben je een Vijf (entertainer), dan hoor je gewoon goed te kunnen zingen/muziek spelen/tekenen en dergelijke. Ben je van een hoge rang? Dan ben je blijkbaar automatisch slim en kan je leraar worden. Ook als je simpelweg veel geld hebt of mee doet aan de Selectie kan je blijkbaar opeens een leraar worden of een hoger beroep, terwijl je daar wellicht totaal niet de kwaliteiten voor hebt! Dit systeem lijkt me totaal onpraktisch maar in de loop van het verhaal kreeg ik wel wat meer begrip, misschien wordt dit groter als ik de andere boeken lees.

De personages vond ik ook zo tuttig als wat. Aspen en America hebben al 2 jaar een relatie, en dan besluit Aspen toch maar dat America beter af is zonder hem? Hoezo dom? Daarna flikt hij het nog om toevallig de wachter van America te zijn en wil hij haar terug. Hoezo besluiteloos en behoorlijk naïef? En wat ziet America dan nog in hem? Hoewel ze zegt dat ze de prins beoordeeld op zijn persoonlijkheid, lijkt ze Aspen meer leuk te vinden door zijn uiterlijk, waardoor ik America al snel een naïef tienermeisje vond. Ondanks dat America en Maxon zich in het begin bestempelen als vrienden, gaan ze toch romantisch doen. Die Aspen is niet alleen besluiteloos, maar America ook! Ze had Aspen al in het begin van de Selectie van haar af moeten zetten, maar ze gaat hem juist niet vergeten, waardoor ze het voor haarzelf alleen maar moeilijk maakt. Besluiteloze types in boeken vind ik sowieso irritant, dus ik kom me veel ergeren aan de personages.

En waar was de actie? Er gebeurde af en toe echt NIKS. Er was nauwelijks spanning en ook de onderlinge concurrentie tussen de meisjes viel behoorlijk mee. Daarbij werd er meer aandacht besteed aan alle mooie jurkjes en het uiterlijk van de dames (ik probeerde als jongen maar over deze fantastische dames te fantaseren zodat ik het boek nog leuk zou vinden, maar.. mweh, nee...). Dit is gewoon geen boek voor jongens.

Aangezien ik de vreselijk gewoonte heb dat ik series afmaak als ik eraan begin, ben ik nog wel van plan om de rest van de boeken te gaan lezen. Ik hoop dat er wat meer spanning komt en het overdreven tuttige prinsessengedeelte ietswat naar de achtergrond zal worden geschoven en er meer aandacht wordt besteed aan de politiek en de rebellen van Illea. Meiden vinden dit boek geweldig en dat is aan de ene kant wel te begrijpen, maar gasten, een goed advies van deze mannelijke boekenwurm: laat dit boek maar liggen! Dit boek is gewoon bestemd voor (verliefde) tienermeisjes die toe zijn aan een zoetsappig verhaal (waar niks mis mee is), dus dit boek is niet besteed voor een fanboy als ik.

Look.
I had to. I just caved and couldn't stop.
This is pure entertainment and I was hooked from the first page. In all honesty, these books are getting me out of my reading slump, so highly recomend if you're stuck in your readings like I was.

All in all, enjoyed Maxon and America endlessly, never seen the bachelor so this concept just weirds me out, but 10 points because the excitement is real. ...more

I just recently joined the bandwagon. I have been reading and I have heard a lot about this book, especially when the second book The Elite Came out April. So I hopped into the parade and joined in, see for myself what the big deal was. What got me about this book was its plot. For me it was a little breath of fresh air, not the usual high school drama I usually encounter. Not the unpopular girl meets the hot most popular guy in school, by ...true love is usually the most inconvenient kind.

I just recently joined the bandwagon. I have been reading and I have heard a lot about this book, especially when the second book The Elite Came out April. So I hopped into the parade and joined in, see for myself what the big deal was. What got me about this book was its plot. For me it was a little breath of fresh air, not the usual high school drama I usually encounter. Not the unpopular girl meets the hot most popular guy in school, by its uniqueness I was completely drawn into the story. I thought to myself after reading the blurb, that it is quite like a fairy tale, I am such a sucker for Prince and Princesses. So that was another point for this book.

It reminded me a little of Hunger Games (less the killing of course) and the show The Bachelor, they kind of have the same format. It was intriguing and fun to read. But I find the flow of the events a little slow paced for a 327 page book. I just wished there was more to it, something a lot more deeper already laid out to keep the readers at the edge of their seats, but I was a little sad there weren't anything that would send me on the edge or had me engrossed by what would happen in the next chapters. It left nothing to look forward to. I am not saying it is not a good book, it is, I enjoyed it. But I was just aiming for something more, maybe something more intelligent and something more that would equate the amount of fame it has been given.

The characters were described well but not enough. I was looking for something special to each and every character, something that would set them apart from the rest, but then again I got a little disappointed. Also the way a scene was described, particularly Prince Maxon and America's first kiss, I wish it was detailed, described vividly as well as the emotions felt by America. It fell short of what I had expected.

But I would be stopping at my disappointments here. I am sure the second book has a lot more to offer. I am really hoping for that. I would like to see if things will turn out as I hope they would. Until then, enjoy this book and find out for yourselves. ...more

I must say that this is one hell of a book. Based on the books that I read, this one's got me really really confused as to wwhere my side is. I adored Aspen. But I love Maxon. Which gave this book a whole lot more than any other books. At least, in this twisted love story both guys have the say. I also love how Kiera made more dialogues which therefore make the story not the boring, since long paragraph really bores me a lot. Im so looking forward to the events and hoping for more of America and ...more

ASPEN, te ame lo que debí amarte, pero MAXON , !oh MAXON! Eres inigualable, aunque me falta mucho por conocerte, se que me seguirás enamorando, necesito un hombre así en mi vida <3, me encanta que por una vez en la vida la protagonista se de a desear y no sea solo pura hormona :).
es un 4.5 bc celeste te odio mucho, y maxon te guardo un poco de rencor por dejarla ser así de no grata.

I really really wanted to like this book, i mean just look at the covers! But it was a really meh book. I didnt exactly hate it but it was too imature and contrived for me and i did not like any of the characters. So sad the book wasnt as good as the covers becauase that would have been a very very good book.
