The Martian is basically science on steroids. I binge-read this novel in preparation for seeing the movie. I'm so glad I did. The book is fascinating. The movie with its incredible cinematography brings Mars and the entire story to life. The Martian is a great example of how survival through science makes for exciting science fiction. ...more

The entire plot revolves around astronaut Mark Watney trying to survive alone on Mars long enough to be rescued. Sure, he’s depending on a government-funded space agency to do it, but otherwise it’s a great Objectivist tale of a man using his reason and wits to get ahead in life.

Interestingly, there’s no villain in this story. There’s no government bureaucrat back at NASA saying that they should let Watney die on Mars, or trying to sabotage things, or any Martians trying to eat Watney. The only
